List of Communist Countries in the World, Including North Korea (2024)

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -Communism is a term attached to countries like North Korea and China. However, several other countries in the world also adhere to communist ideology.

Communism, according to the World Population Review, is a doctrine that aims to equalize the two classes of society so the “capitalist class” doesn’t profit at the expense of the working class.

List of 5 Communist Countries

The fundamental goal of communism is to create a classless society by replacing private ownership with public control of major production means, aiming for equal wealth distribution. World Population Review listed five countries in the world that still follow communism, including the following.

1. China

The communist government in China has existed since 1949 under Mao Zedong’s leadership. China is one of the most popular communist countries in the world. However, over the course of history, China has integrated market-oriented policies since the late 1970s, albeit key industries remain under state control.

2. Cuba

Cuba became a communist country after Fidel Castro overthrew the regime of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. The communist party of Cuba holds strict control over key sectors of the economy. Cuba developed close ties to the Soviet Union, while the United States imposed a ban on all trade with Cuba. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba found new sources of trade and financial subsidies in countries such as China, Bolivia, and Venezuela.

3. Laos

The history of communism in Laos can be traced back to 1975. Laos, officially known as the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, operates under a single-party communist system. In 1991, Laos carried out reforms by adopting a constitution to guarantee human rights. However, the government of Laos violates its own constitution quite frequently. The country began allowing some forms of private ownership in 1988 and joined the World Trade Organization in 2013, despite being largely run by a communist government.

4. North Korea

North Korea is a country that adheres to communist ideology, known as Juche (self-reliance). First introduced in the mid-1950s, this ideology became official state policy in the 1970s. Juche promotes nationalism as embodied in North Korea’s leaders. The North Korean government is notorious for exercising strict control over its citizens’ lives.

5. Vietnam

The final country on the list is Vietnam, which has implemented communist ideology since 1976 under the influence of the Communist Party of Vietnam. In 1986, the Vietnamese government implemented the Doi Moi ideology. These reforms introduced market-oriented policies while maintaining the CPV’s political control. As a result, Vietnam’s economy has experienced significant growth and modernization.
